N2 - The Internet of Things (IoT) expedites a rapid increase in the devices connected to the Internet, which in turn results in a greater demand for reconfigurable wireless mobile devices with multiple frequency-based applications to assure high quality of service. Reconfigurability is a key feature for improving device utility in many technical interfaces. Internet of Things (IoT) based applications requires integration and compatibility between wireless communication technologies to obtain optimum retrieval and exchange of application data. Compatibility between different Internet-connected wireless devices reveals the vital importance of the antenna unit. In this paper, a meander-shaped microstrip patch antenna with enhanced features is proposed for use in IoT and 5G-WiFi applications. The antenna has dimensions of 40 × 15 × 1.6 mm, and consists of a full circle, a semicircle, and a meander line. The substrate of the antenna is made from FR-4 material, and copper has been used as a conductor on the upper and lower surfaces. Performance parameters of the proposed antenna are investigated, and parametric analysis is conducted to investigate the configurability and flexibility of the antenna design. The results show that gain can be improved by adjusting the dimensions of the rectangular ground plane. Moreover, the results show that the proposed antenna has improved specifications with a low return loss below -20 dB at 5.8 GHz operating frequency, wide operating band of 700 MHz, realized gain of 4.35 dBi, and an efficiency of 94.45%. Moreover, the proposed antenna is multi-band with extra operating frequencies of 4.5 GHz, 7 GHz, and 8.5 GHz.
