Abstract

The effect of polymerization conditions of sulfonated-melamine formaldehyde superplasticizers on the workability, mechanical properties and setting of concrete and mortar was investigated. Over twenty super- plasticizers were prepared according to a novel procedure. It was found that reaction conditions have a significant effect on the properties of the superplasticizers and the interaction between them and concrete. The four-step reaction products gave 30-40% better performance than the three-step process. The fourth step conditions of time and temperature affect the stability of the products, but have no significant effect on workability. The effect of reaction conditions on the performance of melamine- based superplasticizers is discussed in terms of molecular theory. © 1988. © 2014 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
