Assessment of Maid Stock (Liza Klunzingeri) in Kuwait Waters

انخفضت كمية إنزال الأسماك في الكويت من 7,000 طن عام 1995 إلى حوالي 3,400 طن عام 2006. وقد بلغت كمية إنزال سمكة الزبيدي (Pampus argenteus) وسمكة الصبور (Tenualosa ilisha) 10% من كمية إنزالها منتصف التسعينات البالغة حوالي 1,000 طن. وتعرضت تقريباً كل مخزونات أسماك الكويت للاستغلال المفرط عدا مخزون سمكة (Liza Klunzingeri) المعروفة بالكويت بسمكة الميد. وفي الوقت الحاضر يتم سنوياً إنزال حوالي 300 طن من سمك الميد، ويعتقد بإمكانية استغلال مخزون هذه السمكة بمعدل أعلى قد يصل إلى عشرة أضعاف كمية الإنزال الحالية. فمن أهداف المقترح وضع خطة عمل واقتراحات لحصاد مستدام طويل الأمد لمخزون الكويت من الميد.

Kuwait`s total fish landings have decreased from 7,000 t in 1995 to 3,400 t in 2006.
Landings of zubaidy (Pampus argenteus) and suboor (Tenualosa ilisha) in 2006 are 10% of their 1,000 t landings in the mid 1990s. Nearly all stocks of Kuwait`s fishes are over exploited except for the mullet (Liza klunzingeri), known locally as maid. At present, about 300 t of maid are landed annually, and it is believed that this species could be exploited at a much higher rate, i.e., perhaps 10 times the current landings. The objective of this proposed study is to develop a management plan and recommendations for the long-term sustainable harvest of Kuwait`s maid stock. The duration of this project is 24 months, with a total budget of KD150,535.
