Purification and Utilization of Industrial Waste Water for Irrigation in Kuwait

Project: General ResearchGeneral Research 1979

Project Details

Abstract English

Water is the most critical resource in Kuwait. The adverse climatic condition in Kuwait, scarcity of rainfall, active desertif?? cation process and shortage of brackish underground water, alongwith the increasing demand for water due to the increase in population, im- plies that all water resources must be identified quantitavely and qualitatively. Large amounts of industrial waste water and ballast water are presently discharged into the Gulf, leading to thermal, chemical and biological pollution problems. These water resources could also add a new dimension to agricultural production in Kuwait, if the pollutant levels can be reduced or tolerated.
This project will be carried out to establish the quantity and quality of these waste water resources, develop procedures for the biological, chemical and physical reduction in levels of pollutants, and assess the utilization of waste waters after various treatments for the production of selected feed and food crops and fish culture.
