Hydro-environmental impacts of Al-Fao Port (Iraq) on Mubarak Port (Kuwait) and Khor Abdullah channels

مــع النمــو الاقتصادي والطموحــات التجاريــة والخطــط التنمويــة الاستراتيجية لــدول المنطقــة يــزداد نشــاط الإنسان المتلخص في تنفيــذ منشــآت ُ حساسـة لتلبـي تلـك الطموحـات. لعـل مـن أهـم المنشـآت في دولـة الكويـت في وقتنـا الراهـن هـو مينـاء مبـارك الواقـع علـى السـاحل الشـرقي لجزيـرة بوبيـان. وممـا ال شـك فيـه أن مينـاء مبـارك يعـد أحـد أكبـر الموانـئ في الخليـج العربـي ممـا لـه أثـر في تنشـيط التجـارة البحريـة ونقـل البضائـع للـدول المجـاورة. وبهـذا يسـاهم مينـاء مبـارك بشـكل مباشـر في تصـور حضـرة صاحـب السـمو أميـر البـاد لرؤيـة دولـة الكويـت بحلـول عـام 2035 لتكـون مركـزاً ً رائـداً في المجـال المالـي، والتجـاري والثقافـي والمؤسسـي. ولكـن هنـاك حاجـة إلى دراسـة علميـة مسـتفيضة لمعرفـة تأثيـر الأعمال الإنشائية إقليمـا في مينـاء الفـاو الكبيـر في العـراق عـلى تشـغيل وكفـاءة مينـاء مبـارك حيـث تقاسـم هـذه الموانـئ الممـر المائـي في خـور عبداللـه وعـى مسـافة تبعـد 10 كيلومتـرات فقـط. كمـا تشـير الحسـابات الأولية بـأن مينـاء الفـاو أكبـر مـن مينـاء مبـارك بسـبعة أضعـاف مـن حيـث المسـاحة الإنشائية. لـذا فـإن الأعمال المصاحبـة لمينـاء الفـاو ضخمـة جـداً وهـي محـط اهتمـام لاسيما مـن الناحيـة البيئيـة والتشـغيلية لمنطقـة خـور عبداللـه ومينـاء مبـارك بالتحديـد. لـذا يهـدف هـذا المقتـرح العلمـي إلى دراسـة الدواعـي الإنشائية لمينـاء الفـاو وأثـره علـى مينـاء مبـارك في الوقـت الراهـن والمسـتقبل مـن خـال إجـراء قياسـات ميدانيـة دقيقـة وإعـداد نمـوذج رقمـي ثالثـي الأبعاد. كمـا يهـدف المشـروع إلى اسـتخدام النمـوذج الرقمـي لوضـع كل الاعتبارات البيئيـة الهامـة وإجـراء عـدة اقتراحـات تسـاهم في فهـم تداعيـات مينـاء الفـاو ودعـم متخـذ القـرار في حـال وقـوع أي أزمـة بيئيـة كانتشـار الملوثـات

The economical growth and the investment plans have accelerated significantly in the Arabian Gulf region to meet the ambitious strategic goals of the countries in the region. Perhaps one of the key infrastructures recently being constructed is Mubarak Port, located at the eastern coast of Boubyan Island. Undoubtedly, Mubarak Port is considered as one of the largest ports in the Arabian Gulf, which would consequently stimulate maritime trade and transporting goods to neighboring countries of Kuwait. Therefore, Mubarak Port contributes directly to the perceptions and visions of H. H. the Amir of the State of Kuwait as the leading country financially, commercially, and institutionally by 2035. However, what requires attention and further research is the construction progress in Al Fao Port in Iraq, which may affect the operation in Mubarak Port. This is crucial since both ports share the same waterway, Khor Abdullah, and are separated by 10 kilometers only. In addition, a rough estimation concludes that Al-Foa port is roughly seven times larger than Mubarak port in terms of offshore constructions. Proportionally, the scale of the potential environmental impact might be significant in the region, which could be extended to the operations of Mubarak port. The current proposal is centered to understand and estimate the environmental impacts and threats of Al Fao Port on Mubarak Port through field investigation, surveying, and numerical modelling. Also, the study aims to set up various environmental scenarios to evaluate the consequences of Al Fao Port to aid the decision and policymakers in order to protect the country’s interests.
