MAK - Modernist Architecture in Kuwait. A Systematic Inventory for the Preservation of Kuwait Modern Heritage (1955-1985)

"أثارت الكويت، لما يقارب العشرين عاما (من الستينيات إلى بداية الثمانينيات) اهتمام كبار المصممين العالميين للعمل بشكل مشترك مع المؤسسات والسلطات المحلية، مخلفين من وراءهم نماذج مهمة للعمارة فيما بعد الحداثة. ازدادت أهمية تشكيل مظهر حضاري جديد للبلد بعد نيل الكويت استقلالها، فقد حظيت الكويت بحضور مصممين عالميين مهمين مثل (دار الهندسة، حسن فتحي. ج. سلطان، س. مكية، أ. روث، بي. ل. نيرفي، وغيرهم) للعمل، في الفترة نفسها تقريبا، على إعادة بناء المدينة الفتية. إلا أن هذا التمدن السريع أفضى إلى تباين واسع في الذائقة العامة ورد فعل قوي، الأمر الذي أدى إلى سوء فهم ذلك النوع من العمارة.
إن عدم تقبل العامة للأسلوب الحداثي للعمارة، وشعورهم بعد الانتماء إليها أدى إلى إهمالها وعدم المحافظة عليها كإرث وطني، ولعلها خسارة كبيرة أن تضيع الفرصة للتعرف على تاريخ الكويت الحديث، إذ أن المحافظة عليها تتطلب المعرفة بأهميتها.
ولهذا السبب، يعتبر مشروع البحث هذا، هو الأول من الناحية المنهجية والموضوعية المتعمقة في تاريخ الهندسة المعمارية الحداثية في الكويت. وباتباع خطي البحوث السابقة في دراسة بيوت ما قبل النفط، يهدف هذا البحث إلى جمع كل المعلومات الممكنة والرسومات الهندسية والصور والأفلام المصورة الأصلية للبنايات الكبيرة. سوف يتم إنشاء قاعدة بيانات رقمية تضم وتنظم كل المعلومات المتعلقة بـ 150 بناء تم في الفترة ما بين 1960 و1980.
وسوف تشكل حصيلة هذا البحث قوام نشرة ومعرض باللغتين العربية والإنجليزية لمركز الأمريكاني الثقافي – دار الآثار الإسلامية."

For about twenty years, from the 60s to the early 8()s, Kuwait catalyzed the attention of major international designers working in pair with local firms and local authorities, and leaving on the ground very important examples of late modem architecture. As Kuwait gained independence and autonomy the necessity of a new landscape to represent the fresh founded state grew high.
This extraordinary presence of valuable designers (Dar al Handasah; Hassan Fathy; G. Sultan; S. Makiya, S.O.M., T.A.C., A. Roth, P.L. Nervi and many others) operating almost in the same period on a single city was certainly a gift for Kuwait, but at the same time, like all the transformations that happened fast, it boosted the critic of superimposing a different culture (and taste) over the local traditions. The result is that in general, nowadays, there is a lack of knowledge and big misconceptions about these architectures.
The local population is showing disaffection, a low sense of belonging to these spaces and very few measures were taken in the past years to promote the conservation and restoration of this important heritage. Erasing this part of the national history, and this local and international architectural heritage, is a big loss for the country and a missed opportunity to investigate the recent Kuwait history. Conservation attitude can come only after a process of knowledge.
Therefore this research project is the first systematic survey and in-depth thematic investigation of Kuwait modernist heritage and concrete architecture. Following the path of previous studies done for the pre-oil houses, the research`s aim is to collect all the possible information including drawings and original picture/videos of the major buildings.
A custom made digital database will collect and organize all this information for a number of 150 buildings already shortlisted (between 1960s - 1980s).
