Abstract English
The main objective of the project is to test and investigate the performance of flat plate collectors equipped with advanced glazing materials in Kuwait climate. Wide installation of solar thermal systems in Kuwait can significantly reduce energy consumption of conventional fuel as well as reduce environmental pollution in Kuwait climate. Solar energy applications at high temperature as air conditioning systems need high collector efficiency with higher working temperature in the range between 80oC and 150oC. New materials, namely, advanced glazing materials that offer superior performance in glazing applications, compared to conventional sheets of glass, is proposed to be installed between the absorber and the conventional glass covers of a flat plate solar collector. These materials can reduce or even suppress both radiative and convective heat losses from the absorber to the surroundings raising the working temperature of the conventional flat plate collector up to 150oC. A collector test station will be installed to measure the performance of flat plate collector equipped with advanced glazing materials. The measurements will be then fitted to the theoretical models to determine the thermal and optical properties of the advanced glazing materials. Finally a simulation program will be developed to investigate the economic feasibility of solar air conditioning systems equipped with advanced glazing materials in Kuwait climate.
