Abstract English
According to WHO estimates in January 2000, there are approximately 53.1 million adults and children worldwide who have been infected with HIV since the beginning of the pandemic and 34.3 million of these are still living with HIV. 18.8 million of these cases have dies from AIDS as has been reported to WHO worldwide. About 16000 new infections occur daily all over the world (WHO Dec.' 1997). Drug addicts are at a particular risk because of the practice of sharing needles and syringes. There is a growing concern that the incidence of AIDS is expected to rise in intravenous drug abusers in future as compared to the present rise through the sexual route. Since there is neither a cure nor a vaccine for AIDS, the spread of AIDS among addicts could possibly be prevented by undertaking "AIDS AWARENESS PROGRAMS" in addicts that may favourable influence the attitudes and knowledge relating to the improvement of health on a personal or a community level.
