Pilot Scale Production of Seed Potato via Tissue Culture

لقد شهد إنتاج البطاطس في الكويت طفرة كبيرة خلال الخمس سنوات الماضية نتيجة لنجاح زراعتها والمحصول العالي الذي تحقق خصوصا في مزارع منطقة العبدلى، مما سبب زيادة كبيرة جدا في استيراد تقاوي البطاطس سنويا. حيث أنه تم بالمعهد تطوير طريقة زراعة البطاطس لإنتاج التقاوي في المختبر لذلك فإن المشروع المقدم يهدف إلى تطبيق هذه التقنية في الإنتاج النمطي على نطاق تجريـبي واسع وذلك بمقارنة طريقتي الإنتاج من حيث الجدوى الإنتاجية وتقييم الطرق المختلفة لإنتاج التقاوي التي توزع على المزارعين واختيار أنجح الطرق للإنتاج النمطي، كما يشتمل المشروع على الدراسة المبدئية للجدوى الاقتصادية والمالية لمشروع تجارى. تشتمل خطة العمل على خمس مهام هى:(1) التحضير للمشروع (2) زراعة الأنسجة (3) الإنتاج النمطي للدرنات الدقيقة المكونة للتقاوي (4) إجراء دراسة الجدوى (5) إعداد التقرير النهائي المفصل. أما مخرجات المشروع فهى توثيق تفصيلي لتقنية الزراعة النسيجية والإنتاج النمطي المكثف لتقاوي البطاطس ودراسة جدوى مبدئية لمشروع تجارى، منشورات علمية لبعض النتائج وعدد كبير من مزارع البطاطس في بنك للأصول الوراثية، وكوادركويتية مدربة على كل التفاصيل الفنية لتقنية إنتاج تقاوي البطاطس.

During the past five years, the area allocated for planting potato in Kuwait was steadily increasing due to the high yield achieved specially in Abdally Farming District. This expansion resulted in high demand for seed potato. In this project, research on a semi-pilot and pilot scale production of seed potato will be conducted. The feasibility of commercial production enterprise will be studied and evaluated. The objectives of the project are: to compare the efficiency of mini-tuber production via in vitro micro-tuber formation with rooted cutting planting in the greenhouse, to evaluate different schemes for production of mini-tubers suitable for field planting and select the most efficient system for pilot scale production, to collect data for determining the cost of mini-tuber production, to carry out a preliminary economic and feasibility study of an enterprise for commercial production of seed potato for the State of Kuwait, to maintain the germplasm of the selected clones in the laboratory, and to train Kuwaiti nationals in all aspects of seed potato production. The work plan of the project consists of the following tasks: (1) mobilization; (2) meristem culture and mass production of in vitro plantlets; (3) pilot scale micro-tuber and mini-tuber production; (4) analysis of cost of seed potato production; (5) environmental risk assessment, (6) techo-economics analysis and; (7) reporting. The outcome of the project will be a detailed production technology for seed potato based upon either one or both systems for mini-tuber production, a pilot scale production system, a preliminary economic and financial feasibility study of an enterprise for commercial production of seed potato in the country, scientific publications, an in vitro germplasm collection of selected potato varieties, and trained nationals capable of carrying out research on potato tissue culture and of supervising a production operation.
