Institutional Review Board (IRB) also known as Ethical Review Committee (ERC)/Research Ethics Committee (REC)/ Clinical Ethics Committee (CEC) has been primarily established for the protection of the rights and welfare of human participants involved in clinical research. It is a regulatory body entrusted with the responsibility of reviewing and monitoring biomedical research involving human subjects. In accordance with the federal regulations and policies of the institute, an IRB has the authority to approve, disapprove, suspend/terminate, monitor, and require modifications in all research activities. Due to an increase in the number ofclinical research conducted worldwide, more and more IRBs have been established. It is mandatory hat all research projects with an involvement of human subjects should be approved by the IRB before ommencement. Therefore, it is important that the performance of the functions and activities of IRB are valuated in order to understand if they manage to accomplish this task effectively. However, evaluating the erformance ofan IRB remains a challenging task. We conducted a systematic review of the available literature on assessment of IRB's worldwide to determine whether the quality and efficiency of IRB assessment is updated, participants' perspective is understood and or whether the standard assessment tools have been updated or not.
