Assessing mental health status of patients with Type II diabetes in Kuwait.

تُضعف الأمراض النفسية المصاحبة لمرض السكري الالتزام بالعلاج، مما يزيد من خطر حدوث مضاعفات خطيرة على المدى القصير والطويل، والتي قد تؤدي إلى العمى، البتر، السكتات الدماغية، التدهور المعرفي، انخفاض جودة الحياة، والوفاة المبكرة. وعندما لا يتم تشخيص ومعالجة الأمراض النفسية المصاحبة للسكري، تكون التكاليف المالية على المجتمع وأنظمة الرعاية الصحية مرتفعة، وكذلك معدلات الإصابة بالعجز والعواقب الصحية للمرضى. تتوفر بيانات محدودة للغاية في دولة الكويت عن الصحة النفسية لمرضى السكري. الهدف من هذه الدراسة هو تحديد الحالة النفسية لمرضى السكري من النوع الثاني والعوامل المرتبطة بها في مدينة الكويت. ستُجرى دراسة مقطعية رصدية في خمس مرافق رعاية صحية أولية مختارة بشكل ملائم في مدينة الكويت، بين مرضى السكري البالغين (>18 سنة) الذين يراجعون المرافق المختارة خلال فترة جمع البيانات والمستعدين للمشاركة. سيتم اختيار عينة من 576 مريضًا بطريقة ملائمة. سيتم استخدام أداة DASS-21 لقياس الصحة النفسية للمرضى، وهي أداة بسيطة وسهلة التطبيق وغير مكلفة. سيقوم اثنان من جامعي البيانات المدربين بجمع البيانات. اعتمادًا على مستوى الإلمام بالقراءة والكتابة لدى المريض، سيتم إما تعبئة الأداة ذاتيًا من قبل المريض أو سيقوم الباحث بإجراء المقابلة بعد انتهاء المريض من الاستشارة وقبل مغادرته للعيادة. سيتم تجنيد المرضى على مدار اليوم وعلى عدة أيام للوصول إلى حجم العينة المستهدف لكل مرفق. سيتم إجراء تحليل البيانات باستخدام برنامج Stata الإصدار 13.0 (Stat Corp. 2013. Mental health comorbidities of diabetes compromise adherence to treatment and thus increase the risk for serious short- and long-term complications, which can result in blindness, amputations, stroke, cognitive decline, decreased quality of life, and premature death. When mental health comorbidities of diabetes are not diagnosed and treated, the financial cost to society and health care systems is substantial, as are the morbidity and health consequences for patients. There is very little prior data available in the State of Kuwait on the mental health of diabetes patients. The objective of this study is to determine the mental health status of type 2 diabetes patients and its associated factors in Kuwait City. An observational cross-sectional study will be conducted at five conveniently selected primary healthcare facilities in Kuwait City amongst adult diabetes patients (>18 years of age) attending selected facilities during the period of data collection and willing to participate. A sample of 576 patients will be conveniently selected. The DASS-21 tool is simple, easy to perform and inexpensive and will be used to assess patients’ mental health. Two trained data collectors will be employed to conduct the data collection. Depending on the literacy level of the patient, the data collection tool will be either self-completed by the patient or the interviewer will administer the questionnaire after the patient completes the consultation process prior to exiting the clinic. Patients will be recruited throughout the day and over several days to meet the target sample size for the specific facility. Data analysis will be conducted using Stata Version 13.0 (Stat Corp.2013.Stata Statistical Software: Release 13, College Station, TX: StataCorp LP). Descriptive statistics will be used to describe participants’ demographic characteristics. Multivariate logistic regression analysis will be conducted to explore the association between participants’ demographic and diabetes related status and participants’ mental health status.
