Stock Assessment of Zobaidy, Pampus Argenteus, in the Northern Arabian Gulf

يصف المقترح المشروع التعاوني لتقييم المخزون المشترك لسمكة الزبيدي ما بين دولة الكويت وإيران في المنطقة الشمالية للخليج العربي. وسمكة الزبيدي تهاجر موسمياً بين مناطق وضع البيض قرب مصبات الأنهار في المياه الإيرانية ومناطق الرعي في المياه الكويتية، ويعتقد أن مناطق حضانتها الأولية في المياه الإيرانية. أن قيمة المصيد لسمكة الزبيدي تشكل من 30 إلى 40% من المصيد الكلي للأسماك الزعنفية في دولة الكويت إلا أن كميات المصيد انخفضت من1100 طن في عام1994 إلى 501 طن في عام 1998. ويعُتقد أن المخزون في المنطقة الشمالية للخليج واقع تحت إجهاد بيئي نتيجة تنامي سعة أساطيل الصيد في المنطقة وكذلك إلى التغيير الأيكولوجي الحاصل نتيجة النقص في تدفق المياه العذبةمن الأنهار. ويهدف المشروع إلى الآتي: 1. التحقق من المؤشرات البيولوجية الضرورية لإدارة المخزون وتحديدها. 2. تحديد الكتلة الحيوية والوفرة النوعية وأنماط الهجرة. 3. وصف تأثير عمليات الصيد على المخزون في المنطقة. 4. اقتراح السياسات العلمية للإدارة وكذلك نظم المعايير لاستدامة انتاج هذا المخزون لمدة طويلة.

It is proposed to assess the valuable stock of Zobaidy in the northern Gulf. Zobaidy migrates seasonally between spawning areas in Iran estuarine water and feeding areas in Kuwait's waters. The primary nursery grounds are believed to be in Iranian waters. Zobaidy catches constitute from 30 to 40% of the total value of Kuwait capture of fin fish but it has declined from 1100 t in 1994 to 501 t in 1998. Now it is believed that the northern Gulf fishery stocks are under environmental stress due to high fishing capacity of fleet and ecological changes due to the decrease in river flow. The objectives proposed are: (1) to investigate and determine the basic biological parameters necessary for management; (2) to determine the standing biomass, seasonal abundance and migration patterns; (3) to delineate the impact of regional fishery activities; and (4) to recommend practical management policies and measures for long-term sustainability of the stock
