Counseling Needs and Rates of Anxiety, Depression and Insomnia in a Sample of Kuwaiti Older Adults

تهدف هذه الدراسة إلى تحديد الحاجات الإرشادية لدى عينة من المسنين الكويتيين، وبيان الفروق بين الجنسين في هذه الحاجات، واستكشاف الارتباط بينها وبين والقلق والاكتئاب والمتغيرات الاجتماعية والديموجرافية. وسوف تستخدم عينة من المسنين ممن تصل أعمارهم إلى 60 سنة وما بعدها ممن يحملون الجنسية الكويتية, ومن النتائج المتوقعة لهذه الدراسة وضع مقياس للحاجات الإرشادية لدى المسنين يحقق المتطلبات الأساسية للقياس النفسي يساعد على تحديد الحالات التي تحتاج إلى إرشاد نفسي، وإتاحة مقياس لمصادر المشكلات النفسية والاجتماعية لدى المسنين يساعد في وضع حلول لهذه المشكلات، وهذان المقياسان يمكنان الباحثين من إجراء دراسات عملية وإرشادية في هذا المجال لاحقا. إن نتائج هذه الدراسة تمهد لوضع برامج إرشادية وعلاجية للمسنين، وتحدد أهم المشكلات النفسية والاجتماعية والمتغيرات الديموجرافية، وسيطبق على عينة الدراسة من المسنين وفي جلسات فردية على شكل مقابلة مقياس جامعة الكويت للقلق، ومقياس مركز الدراسات الوبائية للاكتئاب بالإضافة إلى استمارة بيانات اجتماعية

The generic aim of this study was to estimate the counseling needs in a sample of elderly Kuwaitis (N=366), aged between 60 and 90 years. They responded to the Kuwaiti Checklist of Problems and Counseling Needs. It consists of five subscales including the counseling needs (16 items). The percentage of persons who endorsed one or the other of items ranged from 20.5% to 60.3%. Sex-related differences were significant only in two items. The needs of the elderly was classified into three categories- namely health, social relations, and entertainment. More than half of men and women reported the need for “Selecting the patient and caring doctors”. Based on the five items with the highest frequency, it was found that men choose the items related to health, whereas women favored the items connected with social aspects. The counseling needs were significantly and positively correlated with physical diseases, psychological disorders, problems with offsprings, and social problems. It was recommended to fulfill the elderly needs to reach successful aging.
