Enhancing Scientific Literacy and English Language Proficiency of Public High School Students in Kuwait through Science-Based Writing Projects

كجزء من خطة حكومة الكويت للتنمية الوطنية، وخصوصا فيما يتعلق بوزارة التربية والتي ركزت بشكل كبير في السنوات الأخيرة على تحسين نتاج التعليم في الدولة. إن الاستراتيجية المشتركة هي تعديل النظام المناهج، وتحديث المواد التعليمية، والتطوير المهني للمعلمين، بالإضافة إلى استخدام التكنولوجيا في المراحل المبكرة للتعليم، وزيادة عدد المدارس ثنائية اللغة. كما أن أحدث مبادرة للوزارة قد سعت لإنشاء مدارس نموذجية والتي تحافظ على التراث العربي مع توفير دورات دراسية معينة باللغة الانجليزية على حد سواء. ومع ذلك وبسبب التغيرات الأخيرة ذات الصلة بالمجالات المختصة بالتعليم، فإن ما يعرف حاليا عن تأثير هذه التغييرات التي طرأت سواء على النتاج التربوي أو الممارسات في الصفوف الدراسية قليل. لذا فإن هذا المشروع يحاول أن يعزز التقدم نحو الإنجازات التعليمية لطلبة المرحلة الثانوية في الكويت وذلك عن طريق توجيه تنمية المعرفة العلمية وكذلك معرفة اللغة الانجليزية، وعلى وجه الخصوص مهارات القراءة والكتابة. إن هذه الدراسة تحتوي على تصميم لاختبار مسبق وآخر لاختبار لاحق، وذلك بتدخل يستهدف المعرفة العلمية ومهارات القراءة والكتابة باللغة الانجليزية على حد سواء. كما تحاول الدراسة تحديد المستويات الحالية للمعرفة العلمية وكفاءة اللغة الانجليزية بين طلبة المرحلة الثانوية في الكويت، وكذلك تقترح نموذجا لتعزيز تطوير كلا نوعي المعرفة. ويعتمد النموذج على المشاريع الموجهة للتركيز على القراءة والكتابة بالإنجليزية، وتستخدم كذلك مهارات البحث اللازمة للوصول إلى المعلومات العلمية المتاحة وفهمها. إن تلك المهارات أصبحت ذات علاقة متزايدة على النطاق التعليمي اليوم، ولكنه من السهل أيضا توظيفها في بيئة الأعمال حيث تكون مهارات البحث الجيدة، والتفكير المنطقي، والمناقشة، والشرح الواضح، واستنباط الاستنتاجات المبنية على بيانات تعتبر هي المكونات الرئيسية للعديد من الأنشطة ذات الصلة بالأعمال. كما أن البيانات مجتمعة تغطي الطرق الاستدلالية والاستقرائية، والمنهجيات النوعية والكمية على حد سواء، وتبني جسرا يصل بين المجالين التعليميين البالغي الأهمية ذوا العلاقة بالمصلحة الوطنية.

As part of its national development plan, the Ministry of Education in Kuwait has focused in recent years on enhancing educational outcomes in the country. The strategy has been to revamp the curricula, update instructional materials, enhance professional development for teachers, introduce technology at early stages of education, and increase the number of bilingual schools. The most recent initiative of the Ministry has been to create Model Schools, which maintain both the Arabic heritage and provide coursework in English, creating better opportunities for the Kuwaiti students in terms English skills and knowledge in sciences and social studies. Due to the relatively recent changes in the respective areas of education, little is known about the impact these changes made on educational outcomes and classroom practices. The present project attempts to enhance the progress towards the national educational goals by addressing both the development of scientific literacy as well as English proficiency among government high school students in Kuwait. The study is divided into three stages, with interrelated goals and data-collection instruments designed to provide a comprehensive measurement of the study’s central concepts. Stage one evaluates the current state of high school students’ science literacy in conjunction with their English proficiency, to identify the attainment level and critical gaps. Stage two is an intervention stage enhancing the students’ scientific literacy and English language skills. The activities are designed to foster the development of reading comprehension, writing skills, vocabulary, as well as cognitive and rhetorical strategies crucial for science literacy. Stage three, a post-test stage, first assesses the gains in scientific literacy and in English proficiency. Second, the teachers’ perspectives on the intervention stage will be measured using semi-structured interviews. The combined data cover both deductive and inductive approaches, quantitative and qualitative methodologies, and span two crucial educational fields of national interest.
