A National Study of Behaviors and Attitudes towards the Sun and Skin Cancer in Kuwait

تقدر منظمة الصحة العالمية ما بين مليونان إلى ثلاثة ملايين تشخيص سرطان جلدي حول العالم التي تسببها أشعة الشمس، بالإضافة إلى 132000 حالة ورم جلدي التي تكون أشعة الشمس أحد أسبابها إن فرص حدوث ورم الجلد في تزايد مع مرور الوقت وهذا ما أظهرته نتائج البحث في الموضوع وذلك على خلاف حالات السرطان الأخرى. معظم الأبحاث العلمية المختصة بسرطان الجلد تم نشرها من قبل باحثين من الولايات المتحدة وأستراليا، أما من جانب الشرق الأوسط فهنالك ندرة في المعلومات حول دراية الناس عن سرطان الجلد وموقف وسلوكيات عامة المجتمع تجاه أشعة الشمس. الهدف الأساسي من هذه الدراسة هو البحث في سلوكيات ومواقف السكان في الكويت نحو أشعة الشمس وسرطان الجلد. لأن معظم حالات سرطان الجلد مرتبطة بالتعرض لأشعة الشمس لفترة من الزمن. تعد هذه الدراسة على حد علمنا الأولى من نوعها في تقييم مستند على المجتمع في دراية وسلوكيات السكان حول أشعة الشمس وسرطان الجلد في الشرق الأوسط. سيتم عمل استطلاع ورقي يوزع بشكل عشوائي على عامة السكان في مؤسسة فوزية السلطان للتأهيل، جامعة الكويت، الجامعة الأمريكية في الكويت، ومركز التسوق مارينا مول لضمان التنوع والانتشار تعكس المجتمع في الكويت. سوف يتم عمل تحليل إحصائي دقيق كما هو مشروع في الطلب وذلك بهدف النشر في مجلات النشر العلمية والمؤتمرات.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates between 2 million and 3 million non-melanoma skin cancers and 132,000 melanomas are diagnosed globally each year. Unlike other cancers, a growing body of research has demonstrated that melanoma incidence is increasing over time. American and Australian researchers have published the majority of literature on skin cancer; there is a paucity of data from the Middle East on skin cancer awareness as well as attitudes and behaviors towards the sun. The objective of our study is to explore the attitudes and behaviors of the population of Kuwait toward the sun and skin cancer through our validated survey. The majority of skin cancers are directly related to sun exposure over time. This study represents, to our knowledge, the first population-based assessment of knowledge and behaviors towards the sun and skin cancer within the Middle East. A hard-copy survey will be distributed to a random grouping of Kuwait’s population at the Fawzia Sultan Rehabilitation Institute, Kuwait University, American University, Kuwait and Marina Mall to collect data from the Kuwaiti population. In-depth statistical analyses will be performed as described in our proposal with the goal of preparing a manuscript for publication as well as for conference presentation.
