Establishment of a Seed Bank Unit for Native Plants of Kuwait

تعاني صحراء الكويت من تدهور شديد للنباتات الطبيعية الصحراوية ويرجع السبب في ذلك إلى تعرضها لظروف مناخية قاسية مترافقة مع الاستعمال السيئ من قبل الإنسان مما أدى إلى انخفاض حاد للغطاء النباتي في كافة المناطق الصحراوية، وهذا الانخفاض ساهم بدوره في زيادة مشكلة زحف الرمال والعواصف الترابية. ولذلك يجب اتخاذ إجراء فوري للمحافظة على هذا المورد الطبيعي الهام للأجيال القادمة. وعليه سيتطرق هذا المشروع إلى إنشاء بنك البذور في معهد الكويت للأبحاث العلمية للمحافظة على الخصائص الوراثية للبناتات البرية. وقد تم تحديد الأهداف التالية: 1. دراسة كفاءة البذور وفترات النمو لتحديد الظروف الطبيعية المثلي لزراعة البذور. 2. تطوير معلومات عامة عن طريق جمع وتنظيف وتخزين وزراعة البذور. 3. تدريب الكفاءات المحلية في تنفيذ مهام المشروع وطرق المحافظة على الخصائص الوراثية للنباتات البرية. إن الغاية الرئيسية من الأهداف المحددة المذكورة أعلاه، هي إنشاء وحدة بنك البذور للنباتات البرية وتطوير الإمكانيات المحلية للمحافظة على المدى البعيد من خلال التركيز على جمع بذور النباتات الصحراوية من بيئاتها البرية وتجفيفها وتنظيفها والقيام بتخزينها ودراسة الجودة أثناء التخزين.

The deserts of Kuwait have suffered a significant loss of native flora during the recent past because of both environmental and human-associated factors. This has resulted in a widespread decline in native plant populations and, thus, worsened mobile sand and dust storm problems. Immediate action is necessary if this valuable resource is to be preserved for future generations. The overall objective of this project is to establish a seed bank unit at KISR for conservation, preservation and potential use of Kuwait's native plant seeds. The specific objectives of this project are: • To test viability of seeds over time and determine optimum seed germination conditions. • To generate data on various techniques of desert seed harvesting, cleaning, storage and germination. • To train national staff in the principles and practices of plant conservation and gene bank operation. These objectives will lead to the establishment of Kuwait's native desert plants seed bank and the development of a long-term seed storage facility. The project is divided into six tasks and will be implemented in four years. It focuses on the collection of seeds from their wild populations, handling, cleaning and storage of seeds as well as determination of seed quality.
