Traffic accident statistics and road safety concerns in Kuwait have been highlighted in this research
proposal to be one of the highest in the world. It has been claimed that in Kuwait in 2011, 75,194 road
traffic accidents have occurred. This is an average of 206 accidents per day, or 8.5 per hour. Statistics
show that 450 people died due to these accidents; the fatal traffic accidents have increased alarmingly
in Kuwait with the latest statistics suggesting that there has been a 35% increase in the past three years.
Although there have been a large number of research investigations in the area of road safety and
accidents statistics in the western countries, there is a huge lack of such studies in this field in some
countries such as Kuwait and the Gulf area. This project is designed to investigate and analyze the safety
and increasing accident rate problems in Kuwait. The project is also aimed at investigating road users’
attitudes and perception of the problem, as well as attitudes and acceptance to the probable policies and
measures which can be considered in order to tackle these problems. The proposed project is designed to
be completed jointly by the College of Technological Studies (CTS) in Kuwait and Transport Research
Institute (TRI) at Edinburgh Napier University. This is a great opportunity for academic collaboration
with a UK leading research institute (TRI) and for the development of research capabilities of the CTS.
The research team recognizes the importance of publications and disseminations of the findings from
this research in appropriate and relevant international conferences and international journals.
