Abstract English
This study will determine the design parameters needed for algal-bacterial ponds
for treatment of sewage water under conditions in Kuwait, the efficiency of the
system in treating wastewater, and the degree of disinfection. It is expected
that the study will help pollution control if the ponding system is used as an
accessory to help the established conventional treatment system in case of an
emergency because of mechanical or electrical shut down. The system is also
expected to be of value to isolated communities not connected to the established
treatment system. The treated water should be of a quality suitable for irrigation.
Two facultative ponds will be constructed to operate either in series or in parallel and two identical aerobic high-rate ponds will be constructed and operated either independently or in series with the facultative ponds. As a result of this study an assessment of the effects of operating variables on both design and experimental parameters will be provided in terms of a full-scale system for Kuwait. The results of the study are expected to have both local and regional significance.
