Assessment of Groundwater Quality Change in Water Fields of Kuwait

"نظراً للمناخ الصحراوي الذي یمیز دولة الكویت، والزیادة المطردة في عدد السكان، والتطور الحاصل في قطاعي الصناعة والزراعة فقد
ازداد الطلب على المیاه الجوفیة التي تعد المورد الطبیعي الوحید للمیاه في البلاد، وبالتالي فقد تم استغلال ھذا المورد الحیوي بشكل جائر
حیث تتجاوز معدلات إنتاج المیاه الجوفیة معدلات تغذیتھا الطبیعیة بفعل الأمطار في حقول إنتاج المیاه الجوفیة قلیلة الملوحة. وقد تجلت الآثار
السلبیة الخطیرة للاستغلال غیر الرشید للمیاه الجوفیة في تدھور نوعیة المیاه الجوفیة وانخفاض مستویاتھا. إن استمرار تدھور نوعیة المیاه
الجوفیة وانخفاض مناسیبھا قد یتسبب في فرض قیود صارمة على استخداماتھا، وبالتالي فإنھ من الأھمیة بمكان ان یتم التحكم في معدلات
تدھور المیاه الجوفیة لاسیما في حقول المیاه في البلاد وذلك من خلال تحدید وفھم الأسباب الرئیسیة لھذا التدھور وھو ما یتناولھ ھذا المقترح
الذي سیتم فیھ تحدید وتقییم تطور العناصر الأساسیة للمیاه الجوفیة في حقول الإنتاج بدولة الكویت. ویتوقع أن تساھم مخرجات الدراسة في
تحدید الأسباب الكامنة وراء تدھور نوعیة المیاه الجوفیة مع التركیز على توصیف وتقییم تطور العناصر الأساسیة لنوعیة المیاه الجوفیة في
تلك الحقول. كما یتوقع أن تعود مخرجات ھذه الدراسة بالنفع على متخذي القرار والمعنیین بإدارة وإنتاج المیاه الجوفیة في تلك الحقول."

"In arid Kuwait, rapid increase in population, developments of industry and agriculture sectors have placed heavy
demand on single natural water resource, i.e., groundwater. This heavy demand of water resulted in inefficient
extraction of groundwater (extraction more than recharge) from brackish water production fields. Inefficient extraction
of groundwater has been showing serious adverse consequences such as groundwater quality deterioration as well
as decline in groundwater levels. The continuous deterioration of groundwater quality may impose strict restriction
on the use of groundwater. Therefore, it is important to control the deterioration of groundwater quality. To control the
deterioration of groundwater quality, its reason(s) have to be understood precisely. A study “Assessment of Groundwater
Quality Change in Water Fields of Kuwait” is therefore suggested. The study will help determine the reason behind
deterioration of groundwater quality focusing on characterization and spatio-temporal evolution of groundwater quality
at the locations of selected water fields of Kuwait. It is envisaged that the results of the study will be useful for
authorities responsible for groundwater extraction and management."
