The Role of Technology in Teaching English for Primary Schools in the State of Kuwait

استهدف البحث دراسة استخدام التكنولوجيا الحديثة في تدريس اللغة الانجليزية للصف الاول الابتدائي بمدارس التعليم العام – نظام الفصلين خلال العام الدراسة 1999-2000م. ولقد تم اختيار مجموعة من مدارس البنين ومدارس البنات الابتدائية والمشتركة بالتعاون والتنسيق مع وزارة التربية لتنفيذ الدراسة ميدانياً. وقد استخدمت في هذه الدراسة برامج حاسوبية واشرطة فيديو عديدة لتعليم اللغة الانجليزية. وبدأ التجريب الفعلي في العام الدراسي 1999-2000 م سبقه العام الدراسي 1998-1999م حيث كان عام التحضير والاستعداد والتجريب الاولي ميدانياً. قام فريق البحث بزيارة مدارس التجريب بصورة دورية منتظمة واعدت ووزعت عدة استبانات تخص المادة العلمية والتقنيات التعليمية المصاحبة لتدريس مادة اللغة الانجليزية. وجاءت خلاصة هذه الدراسة بنتائج ومؤشرات ايجابية حيث ان استخدام التكنولوجيا الحديثة يؤدي الى زيادة التعلم لدى التلميذ ويثري خبراته الدراسية وينمي ميوله واتجاهاته ويحفزه لحب تعلم اللغة الانجليزية ويشجعه على التعلم الذاتي والتعلم التعاوني. كما ان التوصيات جاءت مدعمة ومحفزة على اهمية وسرعة ادخال التكنولوجيا الحديثة في المناهج الدراسية كمادة اللغة الانجليزية والمواد الاخرى.

The focus of the study was on the manipulation of modern technology in teaching English as a foreign language to primary stage students – specifically grade 1 in Kuwait government schools. The study accounted for only some of the government schools that adopt the two term scheme during the academic year 1999-2000. With coordination of the Ministry of Education, an empirical study was carried out where computer software and videotapes were utilized. The committee paid regular visits to the schools and distributed questionnaires. The study confirmed that the use of modern technology in teaching English enhanced the students’ level of achievement, developed his/her attitude, motivated them to learn the English language and encouraged self-learning as well as cooperative learning. The study concluded with the strong recommendation of introducing modern technology in teaching English and other subjects at different grade levels. A set of teaching materials were designed consisting of worksheets, videos, transparencies and pictures for use by children for learning the language. Recommendations were made to implement similar technology in teaching English and other subjects at different grade levels.
