Investigation on Some Aspects of the Biology and Ecology of the Endemic Ocypode Crab Leptochryseus Kuwaitense in Intertidal Mudflats of the State of Kuwait

يعتبر السرطان ليبتوكرايسيوس كويتانز من السرطانات المستوطنة في البيئة البحرية الكويتية وذات أهمية بيئية كبيرة. كما أنها ذات انتشار محدود مما يجعلها من الكائنات المهددة بالانقراض وخاصة بالنظر إلى فقدان مساحات كبيرة من البيئة المناسبة لمعيشتها بسبب عمليات الدفان في السواحل الكويتية. والمعلومات العلمية عن هذا السرطان الذي تم اكتشافه في عام 1983 لأول مرة في البيئة البحرية الكويتية قليلة جداً. لذا يهدف المشروع الحالي إلى الدراسة الميدانية والتجارب المخبرية لمدة ثلاث سنوات حول الخصائص البيولوجية والمظاهر البيئية لهذا السرطان. وسوف يضيف هذا المشروع معلومات مهمة عن توزيع هذا الحيوان ووفرته وسلوكه وتكاثره في البيئة البحرية الكويتية. كما يهدف المشروع إلى تقديم توصيات بشأن المحافظة على هذا السرطان النادر في البيئة الساحلية الكويتية

The ocypode crab Leptochryseus kuwaitense is identified as endemic to the state of Kuwait. Despite the ecological significance of this crab, which was described for the first time in 1983, the available information about its biology and ecology is scarce. Also the distribution of he crab is very restricted to the upper intertidal zone, hence the damage caused to its habitat by landfill activities make the species vulnerable. Therefore, the present proposed three year project aims towards investigating some of the crab’s biological and ecological characteristics. The proposed project is based on field work as well as laboratory experiments and studies. It is expected that the results of this study would add to our present poor understanding of the distribution, behavior, abundance, reproduction and some anatomical features of this crab. The information gained will enhance our knowledge and should provide to be instrumental in assessing the importance of this crab in the biodiversity of the coastal marine habitat of Kuwait. The project also aims towards suggesting means for the protection of this endemic species
