Semen Bank for Selected Sheep Breeds in the State of Kuwait and the Arabian Peninsula

إن عملية حفظ السائل المنوي ذي المستوى العالي من أنسال أساسية عالية الجودة في شبه الجزيرة العربية- مثل: النعيمي والنجدي والعواسي- هي عملية ذات مردود علمي واقتصادي عالٍ لصناعة استيلاد الأغنام في المنطقة. كما أن الاحتفاظ بهذه المادة الوراثية لفترات طويلة سيوفر مثل هذه الأنسال دائماً. بالإضافة إلى حماية مزارع الإنتاج من خطر تفشي الأوبئة مثل حمى الوادي المتصدع ومرض الـ "MFD"؛ كما أن وجود هذه الأنسال في حاويات صغيرة جداً (القشات) سيُسهل عملية نقلها محلياً وعالمياً، بالإضافة إلى توفر الأنسال الأساسية. يعتبر هذا البنك بمثابة الأرشيف الذي يمكن الرجوع إليه مستقبلاً عند الحاجة لإنتاج أنواع معينة من الأغنام. وسيتمكن العلماء، في وجود البنك، من إعادة أي نوع من أنواع الحيوانات التي حُفظت والتي قد تكون معرضة للخطر في وقت من الأوقات مثل: النعيمي والنجدي والعواسي. كما أنها ستكون أحد المصادر الأكثر أهمية في دولة الكويت وشبه الجزيرة العربية لحفظ بعض أنواع الأغنام ذات القيمة الاقتصادية والتراثية. وهذا المشروع سيدرب موظفين كويتيين على العمل على تقنيات جمع المني باستعمال المهبل الصناعي والاستمناء الكهربائي، وسيتدربون على استعمال تقنيات أخرى مثل تقييم المني قبل وبعد هذه التقنية، كما سيتدربون على معالجة المني وتقنية التخزين في النيتروجين السائل.

The storage of high standard semen of prime breeds in Arabian Peninsula (Naeemi, Najdi and Awasi) is crucial for sheep industry in the area. Saving this genetic material for long periods of time will ensure the availability of such breeds all the time and will prevent these breeds of being scarce. Such activity will ensure that our farm livestock breeds will not be at risk due to epidemic diseases, such as, foot-and-mouth disease and Rift Valley Fever. Having such genetic material available and in small handy containers with tiny straws will facilitate the transfer of these breeds locally and internationally in addition to the availability of the prime breeds to all the industry sectors. This bank will represent a reservoir where one can refer to in the future for required semen of a particular breed. It will enable scientists to introduce any endangered species of these breeds (Naeemi, Najdi and Awasi) as the semen is already preserved in the bank. It will be one of the most important sources in Kuwait and the Arabian Peninsula for sheep semen. This project will train Kuwaiti junior staff members of KISR on job on semen collection techniques including using artificial vagina and the use of electric ejaculator. They will be trained on using semen preservation techniques and the consequence of semen evaluation before and following this technique.
