Awareness and Practice of Kuwaiti Women regarding the Prevention and Control of Osteoporosis Disease

مرض هشاشة (ترقّق) العظام مرض عضوى يصيب العظام وتقل الكثافة العظمية ويؤدى إلى ضعف ووهن العظام وتتميز العظام بالترقق وقابليتها للكسر بسهولة. كما أن التكلفة المادية لعلاج المضاعفات الناتجة عن المرض باهظة جدا بالرغم من انتشار مرض هشاشة العظام وزيادة المعرفة به وبالمضاعفات الناجمة عنه والعلاجات الجديدة لا تزال هناك فئة قليلة من السيدات الكويتيات على دراية ووعى بخطورة هذا المرض، وهى في تزايد مستمر والتقديرات السنوية الحديثة في الولايات المتحدة فقط بلغت 6.1 بليون دولار سنوياً إذا ما قورنت بالتكلفة المادية لعلاج ترقق العظام فالفرق شاسع جداً. يهدف البحث الحالي لمعرفة الوعي الصحي وحجم المعلومات الاساسية المتوفرة عن هذا المرض من اسباب، عوامل مساعدة، أعراض، تشخيص، والعلاج المتوفر في وزارة الصحة لدى السيدات الكويتيات من الفئة العمرية 45-54 سنة في المحافظات الصحية الست بدولة الكويت. كما سوف يركز البحث على نشر الوعي الصحي الخاص بالعوامل المساعدة للإصابة بالمرض وكيفية الوقاية منها ومعرفة وسائل التشخيص والعلاج للسيدات الكويتيات، مما سيؤدي إلى منع حدوث المضاعفات الخطيرة من الكسور الصعبة العلاج التى قد تخلف اعاقات بدنية بالمصاب وما يترتب عليها من تكاليف التأهيل على الدولة.

Osteoporosis continues to put economical and practical burdens on the health care. Despite the morbidity due to osteoporosis the fact that knowledge of the disease and its consequences has increased tremendously and new effective drugs have been developed, only a minority of Kuwaiti ladies in the society are aware of the disease. Our aim is to measure the awareness of preventable risk factors for osteoporosis between Kuwaiti women aged 45-54 years in all health districts of Kuwait, then to measure the awareness of those women regarding the available preventive measures, provided by the Ministry of Health, and their utilization. Resources should be made available to develop new and improved methods available for ladies such as health education programs to increase their awareness level about the risk factors, methods of diagnosis and treatment of the disease. This will lead to early diagnosis and effective treatment, avoiding serious complications of the disease like hip fractures.
