Standardization of Horticultural and Management Practices for the Commercial Production of Rose Cut Flowers in Kuwait

تعتبر زهرة نبات الورد Rosa Hybrida الأكثر شيوعاً من بين أزهار القطف، وذلك بسبب جمالها وعطرها الفواح. وتستهلك دولة الكويت وبقية دول الخليج العربية كميات كبيرة من الورد على مدار العام. وبما أن الورد لا ينتج محلياً، فإن محلات الأزهار وبائعي التجزئة يعتمدون على الاستيراد. يركز هذا المشروع على تحديد الطرق الفنية والإدارية الناجحة لزراعة الورد داخل البيوت المحمية في الكويت، وذلك عبر تحديد الأصناف والممارسات الزراعية المطلوبة على مدار العام. وتتلخص أهداف المشروع في وضع معايير للممارسات الزراعية المطلوبة لإنتاج ورد عالي الجودة في ظروف البيوت المحمية في الكويت، وتقييم بعض أنواع الورد المتوفرة في السوق العالمية بالنسبة لقابليتها للنمو بالكويت وقدرتها على الإنتاج التجاري لأزهار القطف، وإعداد دراسة جدوى أولية لزراعة الورد على نطاق تجاري في الكويت. وستضم النتائج المتوقعة من هذا المشروع في كتيب تقني للطرق والممارسات الزراعية لإنتاج نباتات عالية الجودة في الكويت، مع قائمة بأنواع الورد المناسبة للإنتاج التجاري، وتفصيل بالممارسات المطلوبة لزراعة الأنواع المرغوبة من الورد، ودراسة الجدوى الاقتصادية لإنتاج الورد على نطاق تجاري. وستتضح الفائدة من المشروع عند نقل المعلومات المتحصلة من هذا المشروع إلى القطاع الخاص وذلك لتطبيقها في العمليات التجارية

Rose (Rosa hybrida) flowers are the most popular of all cut flowers because of its beauty and fragrance. Kuwait and the rest of the Gulf countries consume large quantities of rose cut flowers all the year round. Since cut flowers are not produced locally, flower shops and retail sellers rely on the imported flowers. The present project focuses on the standardization of horticultural and management practices to grow roses successfully in the greenhouse in Kuwait by precisely defining the horticultural practices required for a profitable large-scale production, and study the economic and financial feasibility of a production project. The project objectives are to standardize horticultural practices required for the production of high quality rose cut flowers under the greenhouse growing conditions in Kuwait, to evaluate some rose cultivars available in the international market for their suitability for commercial cut flower production and to conduct an economic and financial feasibility study of a model commercial production project for rose cut flowers. The anticipated outputs are a technical manual and a protocol for the production of high quality and commercially acceptable rose cut flowers under the greenhouse growing conditions in Kuwait, a list of cultivars suitable for commercial production and detailed practical horticultural operations for production of the rose and a feasibility study for its production on a commercial scale. The benefit of the project will be materialized when the technical details and findings are transferred into the private businesses for implementation in commercial production.
