Project Details

Abstract English

Kuwait is an arid country with extremely high weather temperatures. In such environments, air conditioning technologies must be used almost everywhere in Kuwait, which consume substantial electrical energy. With the increase in temperatures during the summer, the electric power consumption escalates. For this reason, new plants should be established to cover the high demand in summer as they may not be used for the rest of the year. On the other hand, increasing freshwater demand and scarcity of natural water resources have led to the desalination processes to secure the freshwater requirement. These desalination plants also consume vast amounts of fuel to secure their energy requirement.

The proposed system uses low-temperature thermal energy to provide air conditioning and freshwater simultaneously. This system consumes less amount of energy compared to single-purpose individual systems. It uses thermal energy to operate a vapor absorption cycle to produce the cooling effect; while the waste heat from this cycle is used to provide the energy required for the thermal desalination system. The proposed desalination system uses the humidification-dehumidification concept. This innovative system can solve the high air temperature and water shortage problems simultaneously and efficiently.

The proposed study is aimed at designing, building, operating, and evaluating this system`s technical and economic feasibility, effectiveness, and optimal operating conditions. Experiments will be conducted to examine the system`s implementation on a larger scale in Kuwait. The proposed innovative system has been granted US Patent No. 11,035,581 B1 from the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Other outcomes include developing a knowledge base for the technical information regarding the design, performance, and efficiency of this technology and preliminary design and technical specification for a modular, semi-commercial unit. The project`s implementation will take 30 months,
