Abstract English
"The aim of the current pilot study is to (1) test the effect of speech anxiety treatment (SAT) on reducing
speech-anxiety and on reducing disfluency in Kuwaiti people who stutter (PWS); (2) test the effect of
speech restructuring (SR) on reducing disfluency, and on reducing speech-anxiety in Kuwaiti PWS.
The outcome of this pilot study should allow further investigation; (3) to test the effect of presenting
both treatments, but with different sequence, on reducing speech-anxiety and disfluency in Kuwaiti
PWS. It is hypothesized that SR will provide a greater reduction than SAT in reducing stuttering and
that SAT will provide a greater reduction than SR in reducing speech anxiety. This research will give us
the general reaction of Kuwaitis to both the SAT and SR treatment programs. It also has the potential
for yielding data that will contribute to our understanding of the anxiety associated with speech
impediments in Kuwait. This research, combined with previous literature on the subject will help
speech therapists and pathologists in Kuwait and the Middle East gain a deeper understanding of
speech therapy methods that are more clinically valid in Kuwait."
