Domesticating Pragmatics, Texture and Culture in Translation

يهدف المشروع إلى: 1. تبيان ضرورة تدخل المترجم على المستوى التداولي (Pragmetrics) لتطويع التغاير في الأهداف التواصلية ودرجة الإبانة في الخطاب وقواعد التأدب بين اللغة المصدر واللغة الهدف. 2. تبيان أهمية إحاطة المترجم بقواعد عملية النظم بين اللغة المصدر واللغة الهدف إذ أن ذلك هو الضامن الوحيد لتقديم خطاب فصيح ومقبول عند قارئ الترجمة. 3. تبيان ضرورة تطويع التعابير التي تتضمن عناصر ثقافية من اللغة المصدر غير موجودة في اللغة الهدف لضمان عملية تواصل ناجحة من خلال الترجمة. وقد خلصت الدراسة إلى التوصيات الآتية: 1. ينبغي على المترجم أن يكون مدركا للفروقات في الأهداف التواصلية ونواميس التأدب للتعابير اللغوية عند الترجمة بين العربية والانجليزية. 2. ينبغي على المترجم أن يأخذ بالاعتبار الاختلافات في قواعد النظم والبيان أثناء الترجمة بين العربية والانجليزية. 3. ينبغي على المترجم الإحاطة بالمصاعب التي تتعلق بالثقافة الاجتماعية والدينية عند الترجمة بين العربية والانجليزية. وقد ناقشت الدراسة نماذج متنوعة من الترجمة بين العربية والانجليزية تتضمن قضايا مختلفة تتعلق بالمستوى التداولي والنظمي والثقافي قادت جميعها إلى التوصيات المذكورة أعلاه.

The project investigates the theme of domestication in three main areas, namely, at the pragmatic, textual and cultural levels when translating between Arabic and English. The major objectives of the research project were as follows: 1. To show how the translator’s intervention at the level of pragmatics is necessary, in order to take account of the mismatches in illocutionary force, degree of explicitness and norms of politeness between the source language (SL) and target language (TL). 2. To show how the translator’s awareness of textual norms in the SL and TL is the key to offering a natural/ idiomatic translation. 3. To show how the domestication of culturally loaded elements is a translational requirement in order to guarantee comprehensibility and avoid communication breakdowns. The research project concluded by stating the following: • The translator should be aware of the mismatches in illocutionary force and norms of politeness between the two languages. • There are some problems relating to text cohesion and text coherence which need to be addressed by the translator. • The translator should be familiar with some hurdles pertaining to social and religious culture in both languages. Throughout, the discussion will be based on authentic translation examples extracted from a variety of existing translations
