COVID-19 Incidence, risk factors and outcomes: the Kuwait experience

الخصائـص السـریریة واإلشـعاعیة للمرضـى الذیـن تـم تشـخیص إصابتھـم بالكوفیـد 19 ، حیـث یتواجـد جمیـع المرضـى الذیـن تـم تشـخیصھم في موقـع واحد حالياً، وھـو مستشـفى جابـر الأحمد الصبـاح، حیـث یحصلـون عـى العـلاج والفحوصـات المعیاریـة بالإضافة إلى ذلـك، تعـد الكویـت واحـدة مـن الـدول القلیلـة التـي تقـوم بإجـراء مسـح للمرضـى الذیـن لا تظھـر علیھـم الأعراض وإدخالھـم في المستشـفى، وتقـدم مجموعـة مـن المرضـى ذوي درجـات متفاوتـة مـن شـدة المـرض. وھـذا التجانـس مفیـد للبحـوث كان الھـدف مـن ھـذه الدراسـة ھـو تحدیـد عوامـل .السـریریة، لأنه یسـھل المقارنـات بیـن الملامح السـریریة للمریـض والنتائـج الخطـورة التـي تتنبـأ بتدھـور النتائـج في المرضـى لدینـا وتطویـر نظـام تسـجیل نقـاط سـریري لتقسـیم مخاطـر المرضـى المشـخصین تـم بالفعـل الحصـول عـلى الموافقـة الأخلاقية لإتمـام ھـذه الدراسـة .بالكوفیـد 19 ، بحیـث یمكـن تخصیـص المـوارد السـریریة بكفــاءة مــن وزارة الصحــة. وســیتم إجــراء مراجعــة المخطــط البیانــي بأثــر رجعــي لجمــع بیانــات المرضــى باســتخدام نظــام الســجلات الطبیــة ســیتم جمـع البیانـات التالیـة لجمیـع المرضـى الذیـن یسـتوفون معاییـر منظمـة الإلكترونية في مستشـفى جابـر الأحمد الصبـاح الصحـة العالمیـة لتشـخیص الكوفیـد 19 : البیانـات الدیموغرافیـة، وعلامـات وأعـراض المـرض، والنتائـج المختبریـة، والنتائـج وسـیتم إجـراء التحلیـل الإحصائي في الموعـد النھائـي لجمـع البیانـات في الشـعاعیة عنـد الدخـول للمستشـفى والنتائـج السـریریة نتوقـع أن الدراسـة في 1 مایـو 2020 . وسـیتم الاستعانة بإحصائـي لإجـراء التحلیـل الإحصائي عنـد الانتهاء مـن جمـع البیانـات تسـاعدنا نتائـج ھـذه الدراسـة في تطویـر نظـام تسـجیل نقـاط سـریري للتنبـؤ بالنتائـج السـریریة. وسـيتم الحقـا التحقـق الإحصائي مـن صحـة نظـام تسـجیل النقـاط ھـذا في دراسـة متابعـة.

As the COVID-19 pandemic evolves, the availability of robust epidemiological and clinical data is imperative to guide clinical
decision-making and to appropriately allocate resources. The state of Kuwait is uniquely poised to elucidate the clinical
and radiographic characteristics of patients diagnosed with COVID-19, as all the patients who have been diagnosed are
currently housed at a single site, Jaber Al Ahmad Al Sabah Hospital, where they have received standardized treatments and
investigations. In addition, Kuwait is one of the few countries to screen asymptomatic patients and admit them to hospital,
offering an array of patients with varying degrees of severity. This homogeneity is advantageous to clinical research, as it
facilitates comparisons between patient’s clinical profiles and outcomes. The aim of this study is to define risk factors that
are predictive of worsening outcomes in our patient populations and to develop a clinical scoring system to risk stratify
patients diagnosed with COVID-19, so that clinical resources can be efficiently allocated. Ethical approval for completion of
this study has already been obtained from the Ministry of Health. A retrospective chart review will be performed to collect
patient data using the electronic medical record system at Jaber Al Ahmad Al Sabah Hospital. The following data will be collected for all patient who meet the WHO criteria for a COVID-19 diagnosis: demographic data, patients’ signs, symptoms,
laboratory findings, radiographic findings on admission and clinical outcomes. Statistical analysis will be performed at the
study’s data collection cut off date of 1st May 2020. Statistical analysis will be performed by a statistician at the completion
of data collection. We expect the findings of this results to help us develop a clinical scoring system to predict clinical
outcomes. This scoring system will then be validated in a follow-up study.
