Abstract English

Properties of airborne mineral dust over Kuwait were studied for the first time using a combination of in-situ and remote sensing methods in 2009 during a joint UK-Kuwait-Saudi Arabia campaign (Ulanowski et. al, 2010). It was found that the dust was electrically charged. The electric field produced by the charging may, in some cases, reach sufficiently high values for dust particles to be aligned. This phenomenon needs further investigation in order to determine its strength and influence on the radiative balance of the atmosphere, dust transport and remote sensing retrievals of dust properties. Lidar soundings, aerosol radiosondes and optical polarimeter will be used for continuous dust layer profiling and alignment measurement
