Preparing Engineers for the Sustainable Future: Embedding the New Kuwait 2035’s Vision into Engineering Curricula

الطلب غير المسبوق على الموارد الطبيعية خلال القرن الماضي أثر سلباً على البيئة، المجتمع والاقتصاد حول العالم. وعليه، اعتمدت الأمم المتحدة أهدافاً تنمويّة مستدامة لتعزيز التنمية المستدامة وقد تبنتها معظم الدول حول العالم ضمن خطتها الاستراتيجية المستقبلية. لذلك، أصبح من الضروري جداّ أن تُهيّأ القوى العاملة بمبادئ الاستدامة. وبما أن الهندسة في صميم معظم أهداف التنمية المستدامة المحددة من قبل الأمم المتحدة، وجب على مؤسسات التعليم العالي الهندسية أن تلعب دوراً أساسياً في هذا المجال، بل أصبح محتّماً ضرورة ترسيخ مفاهيم الاستدامة ضمن برامجها وخطتها التعليمية من أجل تهيئة قوى عاملة قادرة على تسيير البرنامج التطويري المستقبلي المستدام. يهدف هذا المشروع إلى تعاون الجامعة الأسترالية في الكويت وجامعة سانترل كوينزلاند في أستراليا من أجل تقييم وعي الاطراف الفاعلة في مجال الهندسة حول الاستدامة وتطوير استراجيات تعليمية لتخريج مهندسين قادرين على قيادة وتنفيذ أهداف التنمية المستدامة العالمية. كما يهدف المشروع إلى دراسة تأثير البيئة الجغرافية والقيم المجتمعية (الكويت وأستراليا) على تطبيق وكفاءة الاستراتيجيات التعليم المعتمدة.

The unprecedented demand for natural resources in the last century had resulted in adverse impact on the environment, societies, and economies around the globe. The United Nations (UN) adopted sustainable development goals to promote sustainable development which are nowadays driving the strategic planning of most countries around the world. It is hence imperative that the future work force is aware of the sustainable practices. As engineering is a discipline that is front and centre of most of the UN sustainable development goals, engineering higher education institutions must play a significant role in promoting sustainable livelihoods. It is nowadays imperative to embed sustainability in engineering curricula and education practices to prepare a work force that is ready to drive the future development agenda. This project aims to join Australian University (AU), Kuwait and CQUniversity (CQU), Australia to collaboratively review the awareness of sustainability among engineering stakeholders and to develop pedagogical strategies in engineering higher education institutions to graduate engineers who are an asset for the achievement of the worldwide sustainable development goals. The project also aims at identifying whether the environment (Australia vs Kuwait) has any impact on the effectiveness of the implemented pedagogical strategies.
