Assessment of Prevalence and Etiology of Blindness and Visual Impairment in Kuwaiti Population

الغرض الرئيسي هو تبيان معدل انتشار العمى وضعف الإبصار وأسبابهما بين الكويتيين مع توضيح الخصائص الديموغرافية والاجتماعية، مثل: السن والجنس والمستوى التعليمي والحالة الاجتماعية والدخل والسكن، وكذلك تسجيل الحالة المرضية المزمنة للأفراد. وقد تم حساب معدل العمى وضعف الإبصار من أجل تقييم أهمية عناصر الخطورة المختلفة. وقد تم- خلال فترة الدراسة - حساب الأعداد المقدرة من الذكور والإناث الكويتيين المصابين بالعمى وضعف الإبصار فوق سن الأربعين على العموم بسبب المياه البيضاء وداء الشبكية السكري.

The main purpose of the study was to reveal the prevalence and cause of blindness and visual impairment among Kuwaiti nationals and elucidate their demographic and social characteristics - age, gender, level of education, marital status, income and residence, as well as reported co-morbidity. The odds ratios for blindness and low vision were calculated in order to evaluate the weight of the various risk factors. Estimated numbers of male and female Kuwaiti nationals with blindness and low vision, over 40 years of age, as a whole, due to cataract and diabetic retinopathy, were calculated during the study period.
